Item Details
An oil painting on canvas board of a man at work. This painting depicts a worker standing over what appears to be a manual grist mill with both hands on the stone while looking towards the viewer. He poses before an open gate, which overlooks a pastoral landscape to the distance. The painting is signed to the lower right, reading ‘R. Schmit’, and is dated 1831, although the work is attributed to the late 19th century. The painting is presented in a gold tone wooden frame with gessoed ornate motifs to the surface and hanging wire to the verso.
Condition
- small area of paint loss in upper left corner; painting has old repairs; surface was skimmed when cleaned; overpaint is present; frame has surface wear ; frame has old repairs; piece of ornamentation missing on left side and bottom edge of frame.
