An ink drawing on paper diptych by well-listed modernist Abraham Walkowitz (Russia/New York, 1878-1965). Each drawing depicts a gestural figure rendered in fluid lines with the suggestion of movement. Both are signed to the lower center. Presented together under a beige linen mat with black liner, behind glass in a black and gold tone wood frame. A hanging wire is present to the verso.
Walkowitz is an integral figure in the Modernist movement, credited with exhibiting the first modernist paintings in the United States. Born in Siberia, he emmigrated as a young boy to New York where he first studied art. He traveled to Paris in 1906, spending a year studying at Academie Julian. On his return to the U.S. he routinely exhibited at the inluential 291 Gallery owned by Alfred Stieglitz and participated in the groundbreaking Armory Show in 1913.
