Mid-Century Paris Etching Society Aquatint on Paper of Country Landscape Scene

An early to mid 20th-century aquatint etching on paper imported from France for Sidney Z. Lucas’s ‘Paris Etching Society’. The piece depicts a country landscape with a stone wall and distant cottages accented with greenery, shrubs and tall trees. The work is signed in graphite to the lower right; however, no clear artist attribution could be made. It is titled in graphite to the lower center left, appearing to read La Fugue, and additionally noted with ‘36, SZL’ in plate to the lower left, and ‘Paris Etching Society N.Y., U.S.A.’ in plate to the upper right. The print is set under neutral-toned French matting and is presented without glass in a gold tone wooden frame fitted with a sawtooth hanger to the verso.
Condition
- toning, foxing, acid burns and discoloration to paper and matting; abrasions, creases and staining to outer mat with tears to upper right and center left; wear and tape to frame backing; wear, scuffing, scratching and loose joints to frame; no glass is present to frame.
