Hand-Knotted Chinese Accent Rug of the Daoist Eight Immortals

A contemporary hand-knotted Chinese pictorial wool accent rug depicting the Daoist Eight Immortals, likely taken as a representation from a painting or print. From left to right are Lan Caihe holding a flower basket, Cao Guojiu holding castanets, Zhang Guolao with a fish drum, Lü Dongbin with a sword on his back, Zhongli Quan holding a fan, Han Xiangzi playing a flute, Li Tieguai leaning upon a crutch, and He Xiangu holding a large lotus blossom. The central figure is the God of Longevity, Shoulao, riding a crane, holding a ruyi scepter, and holding a peach. The character text at the top reads: ‘寺達興, 献敬’ – ‘To the Daxing Temple, respectfully offered’ (Si da xing, xian jing). The two vertical inscriptions on the side are a date: ‘乾隆四年十一月忉九日’ – ‘Fourth Year of the Qianlong reign, Eleventh Month, Ninth Day’. It has been lightly carved for a dimensional effect. The rug has a small kilim skirt at top and bottom, with dense wool fringe and overcast edges to each side. Unlabeled.
