An oil painting on canvas in the manner of well-listed artist Cornelius Van Leemputten (1841-1902) of a farm scene. This painting depicts a small flock of sheep rendered in an interior barn scene with a few chickens. This work bears the signature ‘C. Van Leemputten’ to the lower left corner. A metal plaque is present to the lower frame edge and reads ‘C. van Leemputten 1841-1902’. This work is presented without glass in a wood frame with a floral and acanthus leaf motif.
Cornelius Van Leemputten was a Belgian painter known for Romantic paintings depicting farmyard animals and landscapes. He is best known his renditions of grazing sheep and shepherds.
Condition
- painting has age cracking throughout; inpainting to lower right corner and throughout; signature was likely added later with inpainting present underneath; piece was relined with wax.
