A chromolithograph on paper A Tantalus of Today by American cartoonist J.S. Pughe (1870-1909). This political cartoon dated June 2, 1897, from Puck Magazine, which was published from 1871 – 1918, shows an Uncle Sam figure bound in ropes wrapped around posts labeled with concerns of the day. The Uncle Same faces a body of water labeled Ocean of Politics and a female figure on the opposite shore is reaching toward him is labeled Prosperity. It is marked J. Ottmann Lith Co. Puck Building NY to the right and Copyright, 1897, by Keppler & Schwarzman. The print is signed in plate to the lower right. This piece is presented triple matted in patriotic red, white, and blue, behind glass, and in a gold tone metal frame. The verso of this piece is equipped to hang.
Condition
- the print has a crease in the center and several spots of water damage throughout.
