An original graphite and watercolor illustration on paper by 20th century Cincinnati artist Carl Schmuelling (1906 – 2009), titled Royal Terns of Sanibel. The painting depicts a small flock of the birds making their way across a flat beach as they cast long shadows onto the sand. The drawing is signed, titled, and dated 11-19-82 in ink to the lower center margin. It is double-matted in gray and white and is presented in a wooden frame with brushed silver tone finish, no glass, and a hanging wire. A gallery tag and artist’s business card are attached to the verso. Schmuelling had a successful architectural career before studying art at the Cincinnati Art Academy post-retirement. His work was primarily inspired by Cincinnati and Floridian landscapes and wildlife.
Condition
- no glass in frame. Notable warping across paper. Scuffing nad denting to upper edge of matting.
