Item Details
Pastel on paper
An original graphite and pastel drawing on paper by 20th century Cincinnati artist Carl Schmuelling (1906 – 2009), titled Zebra Mare & Colt. As the title suggests, the drawing depicts an adult and child zebra standing side-by-side against an empty gray background, their stripes blending seamlessly into one another. The drawing is signed, titled, and dated 11-4-85 in graphite to the lower center margin. It is double-matted in gray and white and is presented behind glass in a wooden frame with brushed silver tone finish and a hanging wire. Schmuelling had a successful architectural career before studying art at the Cincinnati Art Academy post-retirement. His work was primarily inspired by Cincinnati and Floridian landscapes and wildlife.
