An original abstract watercolor painting on paper titled, Adventures Into Subtleties by well listed, Cincinnati artist Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). This painting is typical of Chidlaw’s expressive works, in flowing hues of blue, green, and purple with bold strokes of burnt sienna. Signed to the lower right. Behind acrylic in a gold-toned, wood frame with single white matting; ready to hang. Labelled to the verso Miller Gallery.
Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989) was born in Cleves, Ohio. Chidlaw taught at both Our Lady of Cincinnati College (now part of Xavier University) and the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1946 to 1963 where he was also a student from 1919 to 1923 before going on to study at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Fountainbleu, France. Chidlaw’s art is highly revered and is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University as well as many private collections. The Chidlaw Gallery at the Art Academy of Cincinnati is also named in his honor as he is still revered for being one of the first Abstract Expressionists to work in Cincinnati. He remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved, native artists.
