An original watercolor painting of a rocky coastal landscape by Cincinnati artist, George Milton Hammell (1852-1916). The light, delicate quality of the painting is reminiscent of a cool, crisp morning along the beach. Signed ‘G.M. Hammell’ in red to the lower right. Piece is mounted on paperboard, presented in grey linen mat, under glass in a dark wooden frame.
George Milton Hammel (1852-1916), known for painting landscapes in watercolor, was born in Cincinnati Ohio, the son of Abram Hammel. He was instructed by his father and attended the Ohio Mechanics Institute. Best known as a Protestant minister/teacher and social reformer, he painted primarily for his own enjoyment. Ten months after his death, 92 of his paintings were shown for the first time to the public at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Condition
- 1/2" scratch and light marks in frame; a few spots on matting.
