Southeast Asian "Montagnard" Sword
Item Details
A circa mid-20th century vintage sword in a Southeast Asian style. The blade has a curved edge with indented accent lines, and lettering reading ‘Montagnard’. The hilt has a cross-guard and a hardwood handle with a two-tone diamond lattice pattern. Montagnard is a French term for the Degar people of the Central Highlands of Vietnam, some of whom fought on the anti-communist side in the Vietnam War. Given the style and age of the piece and the marking, the sword might originate with this group, although its provenance could not be determined with certainty at the time of cataloging.
Condition
- significant crack to the wood grip, pommel cap missing, cross-guard loose, blade angled slightly backward, minor notches to edge, light metal discoloration.
