Antique Hand-Knotted Karabagh and Shirvan Tribal Area Rugs
Item Details
A selection of antique hand-knotted Caucasian tribal area rugs. These wool rugs include a Karabagh rug and a Shirvan rug. The Karabagh rug is rendered in a palette of cranberry, midnight blue, sapphire, rose, and green. It begins with three lobed or stepped medallions, including a central, lampa medallion, over a cranberry field. The field is filled with a variety of birds, including peacocks, four-legged animals, and mythical creatures. Compound borders include a crab floral border over midnight blue. The Shirvan rug features a tulip and boteh lattice pattern over a hexagonal lozenge grounded in cream. The lozenge rests on a black herati field. Framing the field are almond blossom minor borders over indigo and a complex meander pattern over cream. Both rugs have overcast selvedges and unbound wool warp fringe. They are unlabeled.
