A pair of engravings on paper. The first of these pieces is titled The South Sea Bubble, engraved by J. Carter. It depicts a crowd of frenzied people negotiating in a stock room, participating in the speculation and corruption that contributed to the South Sea Bubble in England in 1720-1. The second engraving is titled Doctor Johnson in the Ante-Room of the Lord Chesterfield Waiting for an Audience, engraved by C. W. Sharpe. It depicts a crowd of people in a lavish room, with the doctor seated at the left of the composition. Both prints are black and white, with the painter of the original image, engraver, and titles listed in type beneath each image. They are presented under layered mats and glass, in wood frames with hanging hardware affixed to the versos.

Condition

- toning to C.W. Sharpe print; some dirt between glass and mats; toning to J. Carter print; scratches, nicks and wear throughout frames.
