John P. Stewart Oil on Canvas of a Canyonlands Landscape
Item Details
An original signed oil on canvas landscape painting of a Canyonlands by listed Cincinnati artist John P. Stewart, an esteemed professor at the University of Cincinnati DAAP school. Stewart’s artworks have been featured at several museums and institutions including the Whitney Museum and the Baltimore Art Museum. The visually striking work depicts a rocky landscape in Canyonlands National Park, with a lush Mormon farm nestled against the towering red cliffs to the background with bright cloudless sky above. The foreground is dominated by a vivid green grass meadow, with sun-lit treeline and fencing to the mid ground framing a dirt road. Stewart’s use of color in this piece is all the more stunning as the artist is color blind. The piece is signed by the artist on the back of the canvas. Unframed and wired to the back for wall hanging. John Stewart earned a BFA from the University of Colorado and a MFA from University of California in Santa Barbara. He began his teaching career at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, and finished his teaching career at the University of Cincinnati where he started in 1973. His work is widely collected and exhibited with pieces in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art among others. Additional information on the artist is included in the enclosed link.
