John P. Stewart Oil on Canvas Titled "Morning Cyclone Canyon"
Item Details
An original signed oil on canvas landscape painting titled Morning Cyclone Canyon c.1993 by listed Cincinnati artist John P. Stewart, an esteemed professor at the University of Cincinnati DAAP school. Stewart’s artworks have been featured at several museums and institutions including the Whitney Museum and the Baltimore Art Museum. The visually striking work depicts a rocky landscape in Canyonlands National Park, a view of Morning Cyclone Canyon. The work depicts towering sun-washed rock formations to the background, and to the mid ground and foreground, a rock-strewn slope distinguished by a chair-shaped rock, where according to the artist, a cache of water was stashed in preparation for a long trek through the wilderness. Stewart’s use of color in this piece is all the more stunning as the artist is color blind. The piece is signed by the artist on the back of the canvas. Displayed in a gilded and beveled wood frame with black filet. Wired to the back for wall hanging. John Stewart earned a BFA from the University of Colorado and a MFA from University of California in Santa Barbara. He began his teaching career at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, and finished his teaching career at the University of Cincinnati where he started in 1973. His work is widely collected and exhibited with pieces in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art among others. Additional information on the artist is included in the enclosed link.
