Mark Coomer Serigraphs of Colonial and Western American Life

Item Details

In Plate

An assortment of serigraphs of historic American buildings and figures on board by listed artist Mark Coomer (1914-2004). This group of eight prints features scenes of daily life in Colonial Williamsburg, such as a man at the Raleigh Tavern well and a woman in the Wythe House gardens. Also included are five Western-themed prints of a general store, figures on a street with a print shop and drug store, and more. One last print features a mill house on a waterfall. All prints are signed, and some titled, in print to a lower corner and are presented without frames or hanging hardware.

Born in Bay City, Michigan, Mark Coomer studied art in Chicago and Detroit before eventually settling in Arizona. He is known for his paintings and serigraphs, often depicting street patioscapes and urban city scenes. Coomer did almost all of his own printing, limiting his editions to 100. His preferred ground for his prints was masonite board, which combined with the permanent nature of his oil-based inks, were advertised as “washable”. Coomer exhibited his paintings and limited edition serigraphs nationally, and many can be found in private collections and institutions including the Chicago Art Institute; Challis Galleries, Laguna Beach, California; and The West and Walter-Bimson Western Art Collection housed at the University of Arizona Museum of Art.
