Mark Coomer Serigraph Prints of Central American Artifacts

Item Details

In Plate

A selection of serigraphs by listed artist Mark Coomer (1914 – 2004) of Central American artifacts. These nine prints on board include depictions of Aztec and Mayan sculptures, which are contained by an undulating, patterned border in gray, black and red tones. Also included is an East Asian style composition of a woman adorned in a traditional kimono clutching at a scroll, as well as a Creole style building from the frontal view. To the corners of each composition is an in-plate artist signature.

Born in Bay City, Michigan, Mark Coomer studied art in Chicago and Detroit before eventually settling in Arizona. He is known for his paintings and serigraphs, often depicting street patioscapes and urban city scenes. Coomer did almost all of his own printing, limiting his editions to 100. His preferred ground for his prints was masonite board, which combined with the permanent nature of his oil-based inks, were advertised as “washable”. Coomer exhibited his paintings and limited edition serigraphs nationally, and many can be found in private collections and institutions including the Chicago Art Institute; Challis Galleries, Laguna Beach, California; and The West and Walter-Bimson Western Art Collection housed at the University of Arizona Museum of Art.
