An antique Italian oil on linen titled Mother Child Nurture Death. The Romantic style work depicts an allegorical scene with a depiction of John the Baptist, the baby Jesus, Mother Mary and another child in a cave, with a John the Baptist wearing a fur loincloth and holding a staff in his left hand, reaching with his right to take the baby Jesus offered by Mary, with long flowing red hair, nude to the waist, wearing a sheepskin robe around her waist. To her feet, is a naked child playing with fruits and flowers on the cave’s floor. Surrounding the woman and infant are two sheep and a dog, with a goat at the cave’s entrance, which opens to a bright landscape with cloud-filled blue sky, and mountains and meandering river to the distant horizon. The painting is displayed in a gilded beveled frame with decorative curved spandrel corners to the top. Wired to the verso for wall hanging.

minor wear to frame, some paint chips to lower edge and right side of work, one small area of minor damage to left side
