Circa 1885 Giacomo Brogi Panoramic Carbon Print "The Forum Temple Ruins, Rome"
Item Details
A rare, circa 1885 panoramic carbon print of Giacomo Brogi’s (Italy, 1822-1881) photograph titled The Forum Temple Ruins, Rome. The large panoramic carbon print illustrates in sepia tones the Roman Forum predominantly featuring the column remains of The Temple of Saturn in the foreground, the column ruins of the Temple of Castor and Pollux to the right and the Colosseum in the distance. The carbon print is mounted on board as is typical, then presented in a brown velour mat. The carbon print was reported to be purchased by Beatrice Shillito, a Cincinnatian while on a Grand Tour at the turn of the last century and was then given as a wedding present in 1955 to the former owner’s parents. The same carbon print was offered at auction by Sotheby’s in October, 2015 where it was noted that only one other Brogi 19th century carbon print of this image had been offered in decades.
Giacomo Brogi was an Italian photographer with his first studio established in Florence in 1864. After traveling extensively in Egypt, Syria and Palestine, Brogi had photographic studios in both Naples and Rome as well.
Condition
The rare carbon print has some light deterioration in the upper left corner, a 2" tear in the upper top right edge (stabilized by the mounting) and several other minor spots throughout that are scratches in the surface.
