1881 E. Nicolle Etching Titled "Rue des Matelas in Rouen"

Item Details

An 1881 etching titled Rue des Matelas in Rouen after listed artist Emile Frédéric Nicolle (France, 1830 – 1894). The etching depicts a Rouen streetscape with quaint cobblestone street and timber and stone buildings with a horse-drawn cart and woman with basket on her arm entering a doorway. The work is titled in pencil to the left margin, signed and dated to the right. The piece is displayed under glass in an off white mat and narrow gilded frame. Wired to the verso for hanging. Nicolle was a successful ship and cargo broker who painted for the passion of creating, his best subjects the ports and landscapes around Berville. Interestingly, he was the maternal grandfather of the French artists Jacques Villon, Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Marcel Duchamp. He taught them his engraving skills, and partially paid for their formal university educations, all while encouraging their artistic passions. Additional information on the artist is included in the enclosed link.
