Vintage African Nkisi Nkondi Sculpture

A vintage African Nkisi Nkondi sculpture. The sculpture is made of wood, and depicts a standing male, with hands resting on the sides of his thighs. It has been stained with red and yellow ochre, and is studded with rusty nails. The aggressive Nkondi or “hunter,” is sometimes shown with raised hands often holding a spear, representing an anthropomorphic spirit, able to hunt down wrong-doers or enemies, or to strike a spirit responsible for a curse. Many Nkondi were used to affirm oaths or protect villages, with each nail or metal piece often representing a vow or signed treaty. This piece is not signed.
