A collection of five limited editions of classic books dealing with American slavery and related topics, published between 1977 and 1984 as part of the Franklin Library’s 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature collection. These special edition books are bound in full leather with raised bands, gilt page edges and gilt cover decoration; this collection also includes a ‘Notes from the Editors’ booklet for four of the books. The titles in this collection are Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington, Dusk of Dawn: An Essay Toward an Autobiography of a Race Concept by W. E. Burghardt Du Bois, Uncle Remus by Joel Chandler Harris, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Brown’s Body by Stephen Vincent Benét.
