An oil painting on canvas titled Sand and Silence by landscape painter Harry B. Wagoner (American, 1889-1950). Depicted is desert landscape scene in cool pastel tones and soft, painterly brush strokes. Snow frosted mountains line horizon beneath the cloudless sky. In the foreground the calm desert sands appear with scattered bushes of green and yellow color. Signed to the lower right in paint. Presented without glass and housed in the original Art Deco reeded gilt and gesso wood frame.

Harry Wagoner was born in Rochester, Indiana in 1889. He studied under Homer Pollock as a young man and continued his studies in Europe and in Chicago. Wagoner moved to California in 1919 where he first sketched and painted desert landscapes for which he is most well known. In 1934 He would move away and spending his years predominantly in Chicago, Palm Springs, and Phoenix where he would ultimately pass away in 1950.

Condition

- craquelure present throughout the canvas; light marks and scratches to the frame; to the top left the canvas has been patched to the verso and over painted to the front.
