A hand-colored aquatint etching on paper after an original painting by well-listed British painter William Joseph Shayer (1811 – 1891), titled Lord William. The image depicts a horse pulling a man in a cart across a stunning landscape. The print’s title, artist’s names, and following caption are printed to the lower margin: ‘The Property of Samuel Lawrence Esqr. This extraordinary animal Trotted a Match against time, in harness, for a wager of 200 Sovereigns aside from London to Brighton in the unprecedented time of Three hours and Fifty minutes. October 14th, 1842. Driven by the Owner.’ The print is double-matted in red and white and presented behind non-glare glass in a wooden frame with gold tone finish and a hanging wire.
Condition
- light discoloration and creasing to paper. Light scuffing and scratching across frame. Crack to lower left corner of glass.
