Mola Textile Panels

A selection of three framed mola panels. Mola are shirt panels in the traditional dress of the Kuna people in Panama and Columbia. These panels are made using appliqué, embroidery, and fine stitching of brightly colored fabric in striped, geometric patterns. The pieces are made in a majority of bright red, with layers of green, white, pink, blue, navy, black, yellow, and green. The pieces depict animals in varying stages of abstraction, birds, trees, and what appears to be a sea monster that has been embellished with ricrac dwarfing the human figure in front of it. They are all presented mounted on black fabric, behind glass, and in silver tone metal frames.

Condition

- some loose threads; hole in backing fabric on piece with trees; glass does not properly fit to frame for all three pieces; scratches and dust to glass, scuffs and wear to frames.

- measures the frame; visible works measure around: 16.5" W x 14.0" H; this varies slightly between the three.
