Embroidered Burmese Kalaga of a Figure on Horseback

A Burmese kalaga tapestry piece. This piece is created with heavy embroidery and appliqué, and features a padded central image of a figure on horseback. Both horse and figure are decorated with sequins and colorful thread. The ground has been almost fully covered in couched thread with a single ply of metal accenting each line. Borders are embellished with beads. Kalaga come from Myanmar (also known as Burma) and often feature figures from Burmese classical plays. This piece is presented behind a mat and glass in a black frame that is wired for hanging.

- light wear to frame finish; dust collection and smudges to glass; bead missing in upper left corner spandrel.
