Hand-Carved Chinese Wood Panel

Item Details

An early 20th century, hand-carved Chinese wood panel in high relief. The top of the panel features a hand-carved acanthus leaf border, outside floral motifs with squirrels eating fruit from tree branches, and two vertical banners with carved Chinese characters. Translated, these read ‘Second Month of Winter in the Seventh Year of the Republic’ (民國七年, 仲冬吉旦), which dates the piece to 1918. The main motif depicts carved trees with birds and central geometric medallions. Carved elements are applied to a wood board backing with added plywood battons and wire for hanging.

Condition

- to fair. Some wear and cracks to frame.
