Hand-Knotted Tibetan Wool Saddle Blanket Rug

Item Details

A hand-knotted Tibetan wool saddle blanket. The saddle ‘rug’ is used to protect the back of the horse from the frame of the saddle, hence the insertion of a more pliable fabric in the middle to allow it to fold. The piece was made using traditional knotting techniques used for Tibetan rugs. The design features snow lions, the national emblem of Tibet, worked in white, brown, gold, and red against a black background. The central field is surrounded by narrow white, blue, and black guard borders. The primary border has a red background and is filled with fierce dragons in shades of reds, blue, white, black, gold, pink, and brown. A piece of beige fabric has been inserted in the center and the blanket is edged in red cloth. The backing is dark blue.
