An acrylic and mixed media composition wall hanging titled Ashberry Poem- HMS Dystopia by Maryland outsider artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), executed in September of 2009. A frame like structure comprised of sticks, twine and papier-mâché decorated with acrylic paint appears with an abstract work on foam core to the center. The watercolor paint and charcoal drawing depict the lower half of a face with a skeletal like spinal chord falling below. To the left of the painting is a poem by John Ashberry. Signed to the lower right but cut off. The piece comes with an original hanging tag from the artist includes the title and date.

Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
