A mid-20th century oil painting on canvas of the Grand Canyon, attributed to well-listed Mexican-American artist Xavier Martinez (1869-1943). Portrayed in a Tonalist style with muted hues, this work features a view of the large rock formations and peaks in the Grand Canyon. The work is signed with the artist’s monogram symbol to the lower left. It is presented in a brown and gray wood frame. Foam board has been mounted to the stretcher verso and includes an extracted handwritten description with the artist’s name and appears to faintly read ’World’s Fair 1940, New York’.

Condition

- signs of inpainting scattered throughout composition, especially near outer edges; signature appears clean; stretch marks and craquelure along top and bottom of composition; wear throughout frame includes small chips, scratches, paint loss, and stains.
