Frank Kowing Mixed Media Sculpture "Viavru!"

Item Details

An acrylic paint and found object mixed media titled Viavru! by Maryland outsider artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), executed in 2015. Comprised of found objects including a miniature wire Empire State Building model, a plush rabbit toy, a Bosch oscillating cutting tool, and a carved wood elephant. The objects are painted with deep maroon colors and mounted to a plywood base. A hanging tag from the artist has the title, signature and date.

Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
