An engraving after a painting by John Trumbull titled The Leader of our Country. It depicts George Washington standing in his uniform as General, while an aide holds his horse and soldiers battle in the background. Washington’s signature is engraved beneath the image and the print is captioned: ‘The Ledger Carrier’s Annual Greeting to Their Subscribers, New Year 1856. Present This Portrait of ‘The Leader of Our Country’ from an Acknowledged and Much Admired Painting by Col. J. Trumbull.’ It is mounted under glass in a wooden frame with a veneer surface and is wired for hanging.
Condition
- to fair; paper is age darkened, stained to the lower right; soil on glass obscures the image somewhat; one large chip the right edge of the frame, and several minor chips and scratches and scratches to the veneer.
