Antique Breakfront Display Cabinet

Item Details

An antique walnut breakfront display bookshelf and cabinet. Each of the three sections has a beveled cornice with raised, elongated diamond shaped accent to the center, above glass paned arch doors with burled accents to the top corners, and flanked by rounded stiles with ring turning and bishop finials. Inside each cabinet are wooden shelves on wooden sawtooth tracking. Each base has two stacked drawers with hand cut dovetail joints, a center lock, and brass knobs with black drop pulls. The center section is taller and has a deeper body. To the left cabinet door is a brass plaque reading ‘Josephine Robinson Collection;’ it was previously owned by Butler University, per seller.
This piece breaks down into five pieces.

Lelia Josephine Robinson (1850-1891) was the first female graduate from Boston University School of Law, cum laude, class of 1881. She was the first female admitted to the bar and practice in courts in Massachusetts in 1882, after first being denied and then bringing her case to the Massachusetts Supreme Court. She later ran her own legal practice, wrote numerous publications, and advocated for gender equality, particularly in the legal field.
