A plate with Väinämöinen and Joukahainen scene from the Kalevala. This decorative plate depicts a scene from the Finnish national epic poem, the Kalevala. The work is done in a folk art style in shades of blue, brown, black and white. At the base of the illustration is the date ‘1981’. The base of the plate features a portion of the poem in Finnish, Swedish, and English. The display plate is marked ‘Arabia – Finland – Vuosilautanen – Artstallrik – Annual Plate – 1981’ and ‘Design – R. Uosikkinen’. The scene depicted on the front of the plate is that of the sorcerer Väinämöinen causing his rival Joukahainen to sink into a marsh. Raija Uosikkinen (1923-2004) was known for her artwork and designs on porcelain and ceramic ware.
