Edgar Yaeger Oil Painting on Canvas "Tennis"

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas titled Tennis by Edgar Yaeger (American, 1904-1997). Two slightly abstracted figures appear on either side of a net with paddles and dressed in classical drapery. Bold blue tones stretch on in the distance gradually shifting in tonality from ocean to mountains to sky. The loose figural forms, strong color and painterly qualities appear in the fauvist style reminiscent of Amedeo Modigliani’s figures. Signed to the top left. Presented without glass, housed in gilt wood wood frame with canvas liner.

Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
