An oil painting on canvas applied to wood panel titled Folks by California artist Edgar Hatten (American, 1929-1990), executed in 1980. Depicted is an abstract composition of geometric forms rendered in muted earthen tones with an obscured cubist female form to the left. The forms and shapes are contrasted through various degrees of luster and applied canvas. Signed, titled and dated to the verso. The work remains unframed.
Edgar Hatten is known for his portrayals of abstract still-lifes and landscapes, with a focus on expressing mood. He was born in Wyoming and lived most of his life in Los Angeles. He taught at Swinbourne College in Australia, East Los Angeles College, and Citrus College.
