Large Antique Hand-Knotted Old Peking Chinese Area Rug

A large antique Old Peking Chinese area rug. This wool rug is hand-knotted in a traditional Old Peking palette of cream, ivory, sapphire, and midnight blue. It features an allover floral and foliate design incorporating discretely placed motifs over a field of cream. Spandrels include meandering geometric vinework in ivory, weaving in and out of vines and flowers. The field is framed by four borders, including a primary border featuring basketweave fretwork in cream and midnight blue, overlayed by circular medallions enclosing geometric, floral, abstract, or, in the rug’s corners, no imagery. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with unbound ivory wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
