Early 19th Century Rosewood and Brass Campaign Writing Desk

Item Details

An early 19th century campaign desk in rosewood with brass hardware and a fitted interior. The hinged lid has a blank cartouche and there is an ornamental brass escutcheon at the keyhole. An old hand written note included with the writing desk suggests the desk was possibly made by John Pearson of Boston (died 1824), made for Donald Clark (born Argyleshire, Scotland 1808 – 1892). The interlocking ‘JP’ hallmark stamped in the brass at the locking mechanism supports the note. The note also indicates the desk was restored in 1973 when the red leather was applied and possibly the Elma clock. The folding desk has a hidden drawer at the side which opens when the pin at the frame is pulled, three fitted compartments at the top, a compass in one corner(appears to be original) and a newer clock in the other corner. The brass handles at the sides are flush and the working key is present. Several old pocket knives and a map of Scotland were found in the hidden drawer and remain with the desk.
