A pair of early editions of Christmas books by Charles Dickens. The first edition of The Battle of Life: A Love Story and the second edition of The Cricket on the Hearth were both published by Bradbury & Evans of London in December of 1846. Both volumes are bound in full red cloth with blind-stamped and gilt cover decoration and gilt page edges, and both include black-and-white illustrations. A handwritten inscription to the free front endpaper of The Battle of Life reads ‘Charlotte E. Cobb. Christmas 1846.’
