Antique Aquatint Print after Thomas Whitcombe's "Capture of La Vestale"

An antique aquatint print, after an original painting titled Capture of La Vestale, Aug.t 20th 1799. by listed English maritime artist Thomas Whitcombe (1763 – c. 1824). The print depicts two ships battling on open sea, with rolling smoke from cannon fire. The print is marked to the bottom edge of the border ‘Published Aug.t 1, 1816, at 49 Strand, for J.Jenkins’s Naval Achievement’ and ‘Painted by T. Whitcombe’. It is presented with a cream colored mat board that has hand-applied red and blue pinstripes around the opening, along with glass, in a gilded wood frame with a black painted border. Ready to hang.
