A Zsolnay hand painted ceramic jardiniere, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1980s. Lobed melon body planter with a reticulated and gilt color. Hand painted polychrome enamel and gilt decoration pastel floral motif. To the underside is a cobalt mark and signature by hand ‘Rozsahegyine.’
Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
