A pair of Japanese woodblock reprints on rice paper. The first of these prints is titled Returning Sails at Ryôgoku (当世見立美人八景) from the series Eight Views Represented by Modern Beauties (両国のきはん」), attributed to Kitao Shigemasa (北尾 重政, 1739–1820). It depicts two women in flowing kimonos, with inscriptions in Japanese surrounding the figures. The second print is titled Two Women Dancing Sanbasō (女三番叟) after Torii Kiyomitsu I (鳥居 清満, Japanese, 1735–1785). It depicts Kabuki actors in elaborate costumes, with one actor kneeling and offering a decorated black chest to the other. A poem is written in plate near the figures in Japanese, and the work is signed in plate. Each print is presented under a mat and glass, in a wood frame with hanging wire to the verso.
Condition
- toning throughout both prints and mat board; mat burn to prints; residue and stains to edges of both prints; some scratches, markings and wear to both frames.
