William H. Littlefield 1934 Pen & Ink Drawing "Horse For The Ballet"

A 1934 ink drawing on paper of an anthropomorphic animal, titled Horse for the Ballet by well-listed American allegorical and abstract artist William Horace Littlefield (Massachusetts/New York; 1902 – 1969). This drawing, rendered with heavy hatching lines, depicts a figure with a horse’s head and tail, their arms raised and knees bent. This piece is signed and dated in ink to its lower right, along with a signature, title and date in ink to its verso. It is presented under glass and a double mat in a striated black frame with a wire for hanging.

Littlefield created several set designs for the American Ballet in the early 1930s, in addition to creating work for the WPA. His works are represented in the collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Museum of Modern Art, New York; The University of Michigan Museum of Art;
and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, among many others.

- toning and foxing to paper; wear and significant scratching to frame; bottom right corner of frame is chipped; toning, water spots, and punctures to verso.
