Drewes began his artistic career in his homeland of Germany, before his military service in World War I. Traveling throughout Italy and Spain, he studied the works of the Old Masters, and proceeded to tour the United States and East Asia before returning to the Bauhaus, and trained privately under the tutelage of the formidable Wassily Kandinsky.
