18th Century Thomas Wagstaffe Sterling Silver Pocket Watch With Diamond Jewel

An 18th century sterling silver pocket watch with a diamond cap balance jewel by British watchmaker, Thomas Wagstaffe (1724–1802). This piece features a double case, with the initials ‘FCG’ on verso. The interior case houses a white dial, with Roman numeral hour indexes, Arabic calendar date indexes to the interior dial, Arabic minutes indexes to the outer dial, and copper tone spade hands. The key wind and set movement features a genuine rose cut diamond acting as the balance cap jewel, and has a fusee-verge frictional escapement.

Thomas Wagstaffe was a watchmaker from 1766 to 1794 at 33 Gracechurch St., London, and was once commissioned by Benjamin Franklin. The case is made by London silversmith and watch-case maker Thomas Carpenter. It bears five British hallmarks noting sterling standard, 1787 date letter, London city mark, King George III duty mark, and “TC” maker’s mark in a rectangular cartouche. Also included, is a Watchmaker repair paper from Adams & Eaton, which is housed in the interior case.
