Item Details

A set of late 19th century American Brilliant period Russian and Russian Variation cut glass ruby cut to clear stemware. The set of four Russian glasses have curved bowls with rosette cuts above a repeating pattern of four octagonal hobstars surrounding a larger, central prismatic star. The bowls rest on a faceted knobbed stem with the pattern continuing to the verso of the foot. The second set is composed of five glasses in a variation of the Russian pattern with curved bowls with a band of hexagonal hobstars framing a larger band of star cuts. The bowls rest on a faceted knobbed stem with the pattern continuing to the verso of the foot. A band of ruby cut to clear adorns the rim and lower half of the bowl. The pieces are unmarked.

Of all the American Brilliant Period cut glass patterns, the Russian pattern has long been considered the most iconic. The repeating pattern of four octagonal hobstars surrounding a larger, central prismatic star was first designed by Philip McDonald of the T. G. Hawkes & Company, Corning, New York in 1882. Even though a patent was issued, it soon become an an industry standard by the turn of the 20th century. It would be produced by firms such as the New England Glass Company and John Hoare. The richly cut pattern was a staple at White House state dinners and presidential family events from 1891 until 1918. Variations of this pattern in the White House collection incorporate an eagle with a shield on a frosted cartouche.
