A mezzotint engraving by engraver John Sartain (1808-1897) titled ‘The Hon. Mr. Justice Blackstone.’ This print is after an original painting by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) done in 1774 and was later engraved by hand by Sartrain. The print depicts a portrait of jurist Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780) and is titled in-print along the bottom margin. The print is also marked in-print ‘Published by John Campbell, 740 Sansom St. Phila.’ The print is housed in an ornate gold tone frame.

Condition

Some toning to print, some debris under glass, areas of bleaching in margins. Edge wear to frame, inner frame of gesso is cracking. Image is falling out of the frame- needs attention.
