Hand-Knotted Shikli Kazak and Mir-Serabend Accent Rugs

Item Details

A selection of two hand-knotted wool area rugs. The smaller is a mir-a-boteh Serabend rug featuring a stepped diamond-shaped central medallion worked in shades of pale green, coral, off-white, pink, and blue in a blood red field densely filled with -boteh designs knotted in the same palette. The small spandrels are filled with stylized birds in red, off-white, coral, blue, and green. The guard borders have a dark ground infilled with a meaner hooked pattern in shades of red, coral, and blue. The Serabend primary border features a design worked in the same palette against an off-white background. There is short cotton fringe at each end. The larger rug is also hand-knotted wool, likely from the Shikli Kazak region. The central medallion is a stepped diamond with pendants with an indigo ground infilled with shades of madder, coral, green, and camel. The red madder field features lines of repeating patterns of stylized flowers alternating with geometric devices leaves on stems. The compound border is composed of floral and star medallion meanders flanking twinned bands of flowering vines abutting the primary red border infilled with eight-pointed stars and leaves. There is a short cotton fringe at each end. The rugs retain old faded cleaning labels but are otherwise unmarked.
