Large Hand-Knotted Central Persian Area Rug
Item Details
A large, hand-knotted Persian area rug, likely from Central Persia. This semi-rectilinear wool rug features an ornate, stylized herati field comprised of a variety of kaleidoscopically arranged palmettes, vines, flowers, split oak leaves, and stepped diamonds over pomegranate. The palette is pomegranate, black, pink, celadon, and cream. Framing the field are seven borders, including a stylized herati primary border over black. Selvedges are overcast with protective strips sewn along the undersides, the rug finishing at each end with short, unbound wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled and has bright blue weft threads at the reverse.
