19th-Century Zsolnay Reticulated Ceramic Handled Basket

A 19th-century Zsolnay Pottery ceramic basket, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1880s. Highly reticulated handled basket with embossed floral motif and footed base. Hand painted polychrome enamel and gilt decoration in soft pastel pink, green and blue tones. Gilt five churches mark present to the underside.

Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
